State of the World…

We start this week’s summary highlighting an important LGBTI+ holiday: World AIDS Day 2020. Please take a moment to reflect on the people in your life affected by HIV/AIDS, and how you can help through targeted strategies to end AIDS by 2030.

Now, onto the news: Elliot Page came out as transgender this week (YAY!), while John Cleese boarded the transphobic J.K. Rowling train. Pakistan continues to see huge developments in trans rights, the United States seems to be shifting gears with a new president-elect, and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights censured Jamaica for violating the rights of LGBTI citizens. Bizarre news this week as a Hungarian anti-LGBT lawmaker resigned after police apprehended him fleeing a ‘sex party’ amid pandemic restrictions

The Attorney General of Indiana, United States, is arguing to a reverse a Supreme Court ruling so that same-sex parents wouldn’t both be on their child’s birth certificate. Lastly, a major loss for bodily autonomy this week as a court in the United Kingdom ruled against a trans clinic’s treatment for children.

These rights ruled in the courts make a huge difference to our social movement and the lives of LGBTI+ people. We must stay aware and targeted to eliminate institutionalized homophobia and transphobia and reach our global goals.
