We fought tooth and nail for our survival this week!
Activists pushed hard as they appealed the gay sex ban in Singapore, discussed LGBT families in Belize, called for legal recognition of same-sex couples in Albania’s family code, and lobbied to ban discrimination in Japan ahead of the Olympics.
We fought in courts in Germany as a case was heard on queer family rights and Quebec as they invalidated the provincial Civil Code articles that discriminated against trans and non-binary people. Additionally, Norway, Iceland, and Lichtenstein stood up against "LGBT-free zones” in Poland.
It ain’t all positive, though, as two men were caned 77 times for having sex in Indonesia, the Malaysian government stepped up its attacks on LGBT people, Venezuela jailed members of an HIV organization, same-sex couples were excluded from South Korea's new definition of families, and a Mexican governor blocked a marriage equality law that passed the state congress.
The daily battle for our existence dispels any myth that the path to equality is easy. In fact, we celebrate our Pride because of the constant resilience we need to embody in the face of attack.
We sincerely hope you stay resilient and keep your Pride close to your heart in this week ahead!
Global Queer News is an initiative of The Global Center’s Media Unit. Each week, we gather the top seven queer stories from around the world and synthesize them for your knowledge and action.
