This was a turbulent week in the fight for LGBTI+ rights. We experienced erasure, denial, and delay at the personal and systemic levels.
Starting with positive updates, Greece named its first openly gay minister whereas Switzerland continued its advance on marriage equality.
However, these great gains weigh in the shadow of a dark week. Amid an attempted coup, the United States justice department embarked on rolling back civil rights protections for minority groups. Additionally, marriage equality cases in India were delayed as national and state governments have yet to file replies.
At the personal level, a gay Indonesian policeman lost their legal bid for reinstatement, #GaysOverCovid held party-goers accountable for their actions last week in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and anti-gay rhetoric in Uganda ramped up ahead of elections.
There are a lot of things to fear in this world, but our queer lives are not one of them. Despite these atrocious attacks on our humanity and protections, we must continue to fight for recognition and respect for all. We hope you stay healthy, safe, and strong in the week to come!
Global Queer News is an initiative of The Global Center’s Media Unit. Each week, we gather the top seven queer stories from around the world and synthesize them for your knowledge and action.
