This wild week was defined by desecration and opportunity.
Leading with optimism, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council set a date to hear a Cayman Islands’ same-sex marriage appeal. The European Court of Human Rights held Croatia’s response to violent homophobic attacks accountable, finding that it fosters impunity for hate crimes. A European Parliament LGBTI group condemned early moves in Latvia to define family in solely heterosexual terms. Lastly, Sarah McBride became Delaware’s first transgender state senator in the United States.
However, this is met with a thorn in our side as Trump said his farewells by allowing adoption agencies to refuse acknowledgment of same-sex marriages and turn away qualified LGBTQ parents in the United States. A marriage equality opponent committed to running for president again in Costa Rica. Additionally, a desecration trial began in Poland about an LGBT sign on the poster of a revered icon.
Each week we’re reminded of the necessity of celebrating our victories and supporting those individuals and contexts where danger is ongoing. It’s up to us to stay united, strong, and healthy in this critical time!
