This was another exciting week in LGBTI+ rights around the world.
Thailand and Mexico are on the slow yet steady path to marriage equality, legal experts in China launched the first nonprofit foundation dedicated to offering legal aid to the LGBTQ community, the Bank of England unveiled a new banknote celebrating Alan Turing, and the first openly trans person was confirmed by the Senate in the United States.
Meanwhile, the state of Arkansas signed a bill into law that bans transgender women and girls from participating in sports consistent with their gender identity, Namibia denied entry documents for gay dads' twins born via surrogacy in South Africa, and gay men face abuse and prison in Uzbekistan - one of the only countries from the former USSR that criminalizes gay sex.
We must continue to keep fighting for our humanity! Showing up to our lives and the law is the only way to access the human rights guaranteed to LGBTI+ people simply by being human.
Global Queer News is an initiative of The Global Center’s Media Unit. Each week, we gather the top seven queer stories from around the world and synthesize them for your knowledge and action.
