Here is your weekly queer digest of the world’s top LGBTI+ stories.
The Czech Chamber of Deputies passed marriage equality in the first reading - the bill now heads to committees for up to 80 days before a final vote. Taipei’s High Administrative Court in Taiwan ordered the registration of binational same-sex marriages, the Croatian court approved same-sex adoption, couples took Germany to court over its nonrecognition of lesbian parents, and the New York City government voted on the first United States intersex rights legislation of its kind.
Unfortunately, some terrible atrocities occurred this week [trigger warning]. A gay Latvian who was set on fire outside his home has died, the police have charged a man in the killing of a leading LGBTQI activist in Tonga, a severely beaten Uzbek blogger is under house arrest after their release from the hospital, and the Ugandan parliament passed the "Sexual Offences Bill" which enhances the criminalization of same-sex relations.
While legislative progress is moving in some contexts, we can see the immense violence on members of our community in others. We have a right to safety and security - it’s a fundamental right and is non-negotiable. We hope you stay safe and healthy in this week ahead!
Global Queer News is an initiative of The Global Center’s Media Unit. Each week, we gather the top seven queer stories from around the world and synthesize them for your knowledge and action.
